Lancashire sign Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan for the rest of the season

Lancashire Cricket Club have confirmed the signing of Afghanistan left-arm wrist spinner Zahir Khan for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old spinner, who has an impressive first class and T20 record, claiming 34 wickets from seven first-class matches and 15 wickets from eight T20 matches respectively.

The teenager has played an integral role in Afghanistan’s run to the semi-final of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2016 and featured at the ICC Intercontinental Cup, helped the country to secure their status as a Test-playing nation last year.

Khan was selected in this year’s IPL for Rajasthan Royals, whilst in May earlier this year, he was named in Afghanistan’s squad for their inaugural Test match against India.

Lancashire’s head-coach Glen Chapple said, “We’re really pleased that Zahir has joined the Club for the rest of the season.

“He is an exciting prospect and gives us another option with the ball. We’re looking forward to welcoming him to Emirates Old Trafford.”

Khan added, “I’m really excited to be signing for Lancashire for the rest of the campaign. It’s always been an ambition of mine to play county cricket in England and test myself against some of the world’s best players. I can’t wait to get started now.

“I have heard a lot of good things about Lancashire and Emirates Old Trafford from Jos Buttler when I played with him at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and I hope to make a significant contribution during my stay here.”

Khan will feature into The Red Rose county’s squad for their T20 Blast campaign against Durham Jets at the Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday, August 7.
