Collingwood and Jayawardene named as England’s batting consultant

Durham skipper Paul Collingwood and a former captain of Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawardene will both join the England’s management team in consultancy roles as the ECB attempt to end the Three Lions’ poor record in Asian conditions.

The pair will be part of England tour of United Arab Emirates this autumn as well as next year’s World Twenty20.

Collingwood, who played 300 ODIs for England from 2001-11 will work along with the Sri Lanka’s legendary batsman Jayawardene for the first part of their tour to the UAE, which contains three Tests and seven limited-overs games against Pakistan.

“We are delighted that Mahela and Paul will be joining the England management team, supporting our existing specialist coaches in this area,” said director of England cricket Andrew Strauss.

“Both will bring a vast wealth of cricketing knowledge and expertise to the team, and in Mahela’s case, extensive experience of batting in the subcontinent which will be invaluable as part of our wider preparations for the UAE tour.”

Earlier today, the ECB have also announced a 16-man Test squad for the three-match series against Pakistan, that begins in Abu Dhabi on October 13.
