ICC World T20: Angelo Mathews replaces Malinga as Sri Lanka skipper

The right-arm fast bowler Lasith Malinga has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s T20 international captain due to slow recovery from a knee injury.

The 32-year-old Pacer led his side at the recent Asia Cup tournament, where they performed poorly, losing to Bangladesh.

Under Malinga’s captaincy, Sri Lanka won the World Twenty20 in 2014.

All-rounder and Test skipper Angelo Mathews will take over Malinga’s role and will begin their pursuit for another world champion with a clash against a qualifier on March 17.

The defending ICC World T20 champions have dropped to eighth in the world rankings.

Sri Lanka’s World T20 Squad:

Angelo Mathews (capt), Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Dasun Shanaka, Milinda Siriwardana, Suranga Lakmal
