Chelsea plot ambitious January move for Barcelona star Ronald Araujo
Chelsea could be set for a major defensive shake-up in January, with reports claiming the Blues are preparing an approach to sign Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo.
Injury crisis forces Chelsea into action
Enzo Maresca’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has been hit by a relentless injury crisis at the back. The likes of Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana are all sidelined, leaving Chelsea short of options in defence.

Despite the setbacks, the Londoners have managed to stay competitive — sitting seventh in the Premier League with just two defeats in seven games, and securing their first Champions League win of the season against Benfica before the international break.
However, with a long campaign ahead, the club hierarchy recognises the need for reinforcements if they are to maintain consistency on all fronts.
Araujo emerges as Chelsea’s top target
According to Caught Offside, Chelsea are lining up a big-money January move for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo — a player they have tracked for several months. The Uruguayan has been a vital part of Hansi Flick’s side, starting and captaining six of Barca’s 10 matches this season.
Yet, Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles could open the door for Chelsea to swoop in. The Catalan giants valued Araujo at around £61 million earlier this year, and a similar offer could tempt them to cash in as they look to balance the books.
A perfect Premier League fit?
Araujo’s mix of strength, anticipation and ball-playing ability makes him an ideal candidate for Maresca’s possession-based system. Should Barcelona opt to sell, the 25-year-old may relish the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League — and Chelsea’s need for a defensive leader could make this move a perfect match for both parties.
