Everton step up interest in Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis

Everton are weighing up a summer move for Benfica’s defensive midfielder Florentino Luís, according to reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola, relayed by Sport Witness.

The 25-year-old, a product of Benfica’s famed academy, initially struggled to secure a regular starting berth in Lisbon but gained valuable experience during loan spells with AS Monaco in Ligue 1 and Getafe in La Liga. Since returning, he has grown into an important figure for Benfica, racking up over 150 appearances for the Portuguese giants.

Benfica Open to Sale

Despite his progress, Benfica have strengthened their midfield options, leaving Luís’ future uncertain. With two years remaining on his contract, the club are now open to his departure — and in a boost to Everton, have slashed their asking price from £25 million to around £17 million.

This reduction has sparked interest across Europe. Alongside Everton, Juventus, Roma, and Napoli are also monitoring the midfielder, while Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ahli view him as a potential replacement for Franck Kessié.

Why Everton Want Florentino Luís

For Everton, Luís could prove to be a smart addition. A tireless ball-winner with excellent positional sense, the Portuguese midfielder thrives on breaking up play, pressing high up the pitch, and shielding the backline. His clean interceptions and passing range make him equally effective in starting counter-attacks, a quality David Moyes is keen to add to his squad.

With Idrissa Gueye entering the final year of his contract and approaching the twilight of his career at 35, Everton are eager to secure a long-term successor. Luís not only fits the profile but also offers significant resale value should he flourish in the Premier League.

As the Toffees look to reinforce their midfield before the transfer window closes, Florentino Luís has emerged as a priority target — though they will need to fend off stiff competition from Serie A heavyweights and the lure of Saudi Arabia.
