Atletico Madrid closing in on £55m deal for Cristian Romero
In a summer twist that’s set to shake up Tottenham Hotspur, Cristian Romero is edging closer to a sensational £55 million move to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender has reportedly informed the Spurs hierarchy of his desire to leave, despite the club’s attempts to keep him at all costs.

According to TBR Football, the World Cup-winning centre-back has made up his mind after being approached directly by Diego Simeone, who’s keen to make Romero a defensive lynchpin in his Atletico project. It’s understood that personal conversations with Simeone played a pivotal role in swaying Romero towards La Liga, despite Tottenham’s strong push to retain him.
Tottenham’s European High Doesn’t Stop Exodus
Spurs defied all odds by clinching Champions League qualification through their Europa League triumph, despite finishing 17th in the Premier League. Yet even that impressive feat hasn’t been enough to convince Romero to stay in North London.
Chairman Daniel Levy had pulled out all the stops, even offering to make Romero the highest-paid player at the club. However, the 27-year-old has made his stance clear—he wants a new challenge in Spain, and a reunion with the Argentine defensive discipline under Simeone clearly appeals.
Atletico Ready to Splash the Cash
Atletico Madrid’s £55 million bid appears to be just shy of Levy’s original £59 million valuation, but close enough to seal the deal. With a war chest of £200 million this summer, Romero looks set to become the cornerstone of a new defensive era at the Wanda Metropolitano.
For Spurs, Romero’s departure is a significant blow. However, they are already moving swiftly to shore up the defence, with the permanent signing of Kevin Danso reportedly nearing completion.
As the deal edges closer, all eyes will be on how Tottenham respond in the transfer market—and whether Romero’s gamble pays off in La Liga.
