Manchester City Launch €40m Bid for FC Porto Star Diogo Costa

Manchester City have entered the race to sign Portuguese shot-stopper Diogo Costa, submitting a €40 million bid to FC Porto as they look to reinforce their goalkeeping department this summer.

Diogo Costa: Europe’s Most Wanted Goalkeeper?

The 25-year-old has become one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football. Since breaking into FC Porto’s first team, Costa has racked up nearly 200 appearances, recorded 82 clean sheets, and become a key figure for the Portuguese national team with 34 caps to date. His sharp reflexes, ball-playing ability, and composure under pressure have not only made him a standout in the Primeira Liga but also caught the eye of top Premier League clubs.

City vs United: The Battle for Costa

Manchester City’s interest comes amid growing uncertainty over Ederson’s future, while back-up keeper Stefan Ortega’s long-term role is also in doubt. Pep Guardiola’s side see Costa as a natural successor and have taken the first step by tabling a €40 million offer — although that’s well short of his €75 million release clause.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are also monitoring the situation. With Andre Onana’s inconsistent form and Altay Bayindir potentially departing, the Red Devils view Costa as a serious candidate. However, United may find it harder to meet Porto’s full valuation.

What Happens Next?

City’s opening bid is a statement of intent, but it remains to be seen whether Porto will budge from their €75 million stance. If the Citizens are serious about Costa, they may need to dig deeper. One thing is certain — a Premier League move looks increasingly likely for Portugal’s No.1.
