Marc Guehi to Liverpool: Reds remain optimistic despite summer collapse
Liverpool are reportedly still in pole position to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, despite their failed attempt to bring him to Anfield in the summer transfer window.
Liverpool’s Summer Near-Miss
According to Football Insider, the Reds had a £35 million deal in place with Palace on deadline day, with Guehi even completing his medical ahead of a proposed move. However, the transfer collapsed at the last moment after the Eagles were unable to secure a replacement before the window slammed shut.
Despite that disappointment, Liverpool have not given up hope. Instead of revisiting a deal in January, the Merseyside giants are now prepared to play the long game, with Guehi’s contract expiring next summer.

Free Transfer Advantage
The 24-year-old is set to become one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, with Manchester City and Real Madrid also keeping tabs on his situation. But reports suggest Liverpool remain confident of sealing his signature on a free transfer.
Guehi himself was reportedly keen to join Jurgen Klopp’s side, having gone as far as preparing to sign a long-term deal before Palace pulled the plug. His strong desire to make the move could prove decisive in Liverpool’s favour.
Palace Captain Still Focused
Despite the failed move, Guehi showed his professionalism by returning to lead Palace against Sunderland last weekend, keeping a clean sheet as his side maintained their unbeaten Premier League start.
From January, he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs, though Liverpool will hope their relationship with the player gives them the edge over domestic rivals.
Anfield’s Defensive Priority
Valued at around £39 million, Guehi would be a huge coup for the Reds, particularly on a Bosman deal. With his Premier League experience, leadership qualities, and age profile, he fits perfectly into Liverpool’s long-term defensive rebuild.
If Liverpool play their cards right, they could secure one of the league’s top centre-backs for free – a transfer masterstroke that could strengthen their title ambitions for years to come.
