Man United launch €40m bid for Morten Hjulmand

Manchester United have stepped up their summer transfer plans by launching a €40 million bid for Sporting CP’s midfield general, Morten Hjulmand, according to Calciomercato.

Red Devils Eye Midfield Reinforcement

With uncertainty surrounding Casemiro’s future and Manuel Ugarte struggling to settle, United are actively seeking a new defensive midfielder. The 26-year-old Danish international has emerged as a key target, with Erik ten Hag eager to bolster the spine of his team ahead of the new Premier League season.

Hjulmand, who joined Sporting CP from Lecce in 2023, has quickly established himself as a vital cog in Ruben Amorim’s setup. Known for his positional intelligence, tenacity, and ball progression, the Dane has made close to 100 appearances for the Portuguese giants, contributing seven goals and six assists.

Sporting Hold Out for €50 Million

Despite Hjulmand’s contract containing an €80 million release clause, Sporting are reportedly willing to let him leave for around €50 million. Manchester United’s current offer of €40 million falls short, but negotiations are expected to continue.

Juventus have also shown interest, but financial constraints could rule the Serie A club out of the race—giving United a potential free run at the player.

Ruben Amorim Reunion in Manchester?

One key factor in United’s favour could be Ruben Amorim himself. The Sporting boss has been heavily linked with the Old Trafford managerial role, and a reunion with Hjulmand could suit both parties. If Amorim is indeed appointed, United’s chances of landing the Danish midfielder may significantly improve.

Final Thoughts

Manchester United’s pursuit of Morten Hjulmand signals a clear intent to reshape their midfield with quality and discipline. With talks ongoing, it remains to be seen whether the Premier League giants will return with an improved offer to match Sporting’s valuation.
