Man United keen on another midfielder

Manchester United are gearing up for another busy transfer window, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Red Devils are set to push for a new midfielder in January.

United’s Midfield Struggles Continue

The summer arrival of Manuel Ugarte was expected to solidify United’s midfield, but the Uruguayan has struggled to adapt to Premier League football. With Casemiro’s form inconsistent and his contract winding down, manager Ruben Amorim is desperate for fresh legs in the engine room.

United had tried to address this issue in the summer, targeting several players without success. Atalanta’s Ederson was considered but never pursued seriously, while Brighton’s Carlos Baleba became the club’s priority target. Talks were held, but Brighton stood firm, refusing to sanction his exit.

As the window closed, United even explored a loan move for Conor Gallagher, but Atletico Madrid rejected any possibility of letting him leave.

January Targets: Baleba, Gallagher, and Wharton

According to Romano, United remain highly interested in signing Baleba. However, prising him away from Brighton in mid-season looks challenging, meaning Gallagher could once again emerge as a realistic short-term solution. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace starlet Adam Wharton is also on the radar after impressing with his athleticism and composure in midfield.

Amorim’s Midfield Dilemma

Currently, Amorim has limited options in central midfield: Casemiro, Ugarte, and young Kobbie Mainoo. While Bruno Fernandes has been pushed into a deeper role, it’s far from ideal for the Portuguese playmaker. Amorim is said to want an athletic, box-to-box profile—someone who can inject energy and balance into the squad.

With Casemiro’s likely departure and Ugarte still finding his feet, United know they cannot afford another failed window. The upcoming January market could be decisive in shaping their season.

Whoever comes in—Baleba, Gallagher, or Wharton—Manchester United’s midfield overhaul looks set to continue.
