Aston Villa interested in Pedro Goncalves

Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Goncalves has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Aston Villa.

The 24-year-old midfielder has gained widespread attention across Europe after scoring a remarkable goal from the halfway line against Arsenal in the Europa League last Thursday.

The Portugal international has scored an impressive 23 league goals in his first season at Sporting in 2020-21. The attacking midfielder has continued to maintain his prolific form this season, contributing 17 goals and nine assists.

According to Record, Aston Villa are reportedly planning to make a move for the Portuguese at the end of the season.

Although the midfielder previously spent two years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, he did not feature in the Premier League during his time at Molineux.

After leaving Wolves, the midfielder joined Famalicao, where he spent just one season before moving to Sporting. However, there is a potential obstacle that could complicate any potential deal between Villa and Sporting.

Goncalves’s contract includes a 50% sell-on fee owed to Famalicao, which means Sporting may be unwilling to sell for less than his €80m (£70m) release clause due to the significant amount of money they could lose.

Rumours suggest that Sporting may be looking to buy out the sell-on clause. This move could provide more flexibility for both clubs in their negotiations to make a deal happen.
